With creepy carousel music heightening your suspense, this year’s interactive Halloween neighborhood presents a series of doors, behind which lurk fearsome beasts. To see them, you need only knock. err, click on the door. The animals you’ll encounter involved a bat, a tarantula and even an octopus.
After your host’s door opens, you’ll have the option of getting either a use or a trick (or both) from the creature inside. The tricks, as they should be, are fun (no spoilers here). The treats include sweet little factoids about your new friend.

Google Delivers Big Update to Password Manager for Chrome, Android

Each plot of land cost $5,846 (or 305 ape coin, a cryptocurrency Yuga rendered for its metaverse, which was valued at $19.17 per coin at the time of the sale). Otherside land deeds sold out immediately, netting Yuga in $320 million. Virtual land speculators hoping to flip a helpful were grinning: Secondary market sales on OpenSea, the biggest NFT marketplace, fluctuated between $20,000 and $30,000.
It was a huge collapsed for Yuga Labs’ bottom line, but not necessarily for its reputation, or for blockchain technology in general. The NFT commence was riddled with issues that highlight all the inefficiencies implicated by cryptocurrency trading.
The big one is gas fees. To transact on Ethereum, you need to pay for “gas” — essentially a transaction fee, the expense of which is clear by how much activity is occurring on the blockchain. Someone tweeted a picture of them trying to send $100 in crypto from one wallet to unexperienced, showing it required $1,700 in gas fees.
Worse are those whose Otherside transactions handed. Because the amount of people trying to buy was greater than the supply of Otherside NFTs, not every try was successful. (Thus, people forking out thousands for gas to censured their transaction went to the front of the queue.) Typically, failed transactions cost around $30, painful enough. Because gas was so insanely high, these handed transactions ended up costing some people up to $4,500 (1.6 ether).
Over $175 million was devoted on gas alone. Ethereum’s blockchain has a deflationary protocol that burns most ether devoted on gas — so much of that $175 million is now naively gone.
Yuga Labs said in a Twitter statement that it would refund those handed transaction fees and that it may develop a whole new blockchain to run its metaverse actions. Ethereum is a notoriously inefficient blockchain, with others like Solana and Tezos populate much cheaper and less environmentally damaging. Others argued that the wrong isn’t with ethereum, but with the way Yuga Labs set up the sale and the inefficiency of its lustrous contract.
“Needless to say tonight didn’t go how anyone demanded it to,” tweeted Greg Solano, one of Bored Ape Yacht Club’s founders. “I want to say sorry to the apes, and to everyone else who eagerly explored to join into the project.”
Despite the painful commence, and many angry tweeters, don’t expect Otherside to fail. At the time of writing, over $557 million in Otherside land deeds have been sold on OpenSea, making it the fifth biggest collection of all time. Coupled with the $320 million devoted during the public sale, that means Otherside is nearing $1 billion in volume.
New Facebook Portals add travel option and more work-from-home smarts

Smart displays can play a part in communicating with loved ones and bosses from much away. Now, Facebook is adding to its lineup of Portal devices for even more virtual visiting options.

The droplet of two new devices shows how the social deem giant wants to play an even bigger role in our daily lives as the pandemic controls the popularity of video-chatting. Still, privacy concerns about Facebook could make country think twice about buying Portal devices, especially when they have plenty of novel options for smart displays.

I expected Facebook what might convince someone to make the switch from a tablet to the Portal. Lisa Auslen, communications lead at Facebook, pointed out that the wide-angle, panning camera and tuned audio make it better for video-calling than a tablet, and that built-in Facebook Assistant and Amazon Alexa features are an advantageous. Then there’s the Household Mode feature.
“[The] Portal is pointed to be used as a communal device that is available for everyone in the home. Tablets are really planned as personal devices and aren’t typically used in ways where household members can actual on them being available,” Auslen said. “Household Mode is an example of how we are creation on this – a computer for the house that can be community, and anyone can use to make a call and yell a more personalized experience through our support for multiple users.”

A new Household Mode invents the Portal a more manageable device for the whole family. You can choose which apps to share with everyone and which contacts are available to everyone in Messenger or WhatsApp so your 4-year-old doesn’t call your boss.

Who contains a Portal?
The Portals are partly marketed as an accessory for the remote workers many of us have move since the coronavirus pandemic hit. With multiple teleconferencing platforms onboard — BlueJeans, GoToMeeting, Workplace, Webex and Zoom, with Microsoft Teams coming in December — the undulating for these new Portals feels more to businesses than persons.
Facebook says companies can purchase these new radiant displays in bulk through Portal for Business, a service that turns Portals into corporate devices, complete with features like required password updates and remote wiping and rebooting. Employees can use a Facebook Work Account instead of a personal one.
“One of the big barriers that we’ve had for adoption … by workers is their affairs wanting to actually have those simple tools to run and deploy those devices,” said Micah Collins, director of copies management for Portal. Collins said the Portal Plus could be a more popular tool for remote work because of its larger screen. The Portal Go could be useful for chatting with friends and families as children or latest people move to different rooms.
Earlier in the pandemic, CNET spoke to people who bought Portal devices for older relatives. Research firm Strategy Analytics said that while Portal sales have grown, the device is still not widely popular. Facebook’s Portal devices made up 1.1% of the global shipments of radiant speakers and smart displays in the second quarter of this year, according to Strategy Analytics.
“The largest obstacle for Facebook is probable that consumers are wary of Facebook surveilling them and collecting even more data than it already does. A terminate runner-up to consider is consumers simply don’t see Facebook as a hardware/device company,” said Jack Narcotta, a senior industry analyst at Strategy Analytics who meetings smart home services and devices.

Encryption is present for WhatsApp calls and Facebook’s Messenger app will soon have end-to-end encryption for Portal squawk and video calls, but only for contacts and groups you specify. Not offering end-to-end encryption by default on all words and chats is a red flag out of the gate.
Collins said customer worries are “complex,” but the company is listening to feedback after taking privacy and user safety “extremely seriously.” In 2019, Facebook temporarily ended human review of audio after Bloomberg reported that contractors had been listening to “Hey, Portal” clips to proceed the accuracy of the device’s software. Portal users can turn off storage of their “Hey, Portal” interactions in the device’s settings or delete this data.

Given Facebook’s past and modern privacy issues, I’m still wary of suggesting that a Facebook Portal is a good transfer to your home. I’ll be reviewing the Portal Go and Portal Plus in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for my final thoughts on these new intelligent displays.

I was about 20 when the DMC-12 came out and I purchase very well what a big deal it was: We’d seen wedge-shaped dream cars by, but this one seemed to be more innovative and sophisticated. Instead of just horsepower and curvaceous sheet metal, the DMC-12 came across as the thinking person’s exotic — more BMW M1 than Lamborghini Countach.
The DeLorean DMC-12 distinguished a style far beyond motorheads.
DeLorean Motor Company
It explored great, inside and out, like an elevation of real cars rather than an exotic model you couldn’t anticipated yourself in. Compare the Giugiaro-penned exterior styling of a DMC-12 to the Mattel-like Bricklin SV-1, or the DeLorean’s tasteful interior to kit-car vibe inside a much more expensive Countach.
That’s because DeLorean was John DeLorean, the ex-head of vehicle production at GM, who appointed the muscle car category with the Pontiac GTO. He also led the inaugurate of the Chevy Vega, which — while snickered at immediately — was a major piece of innovation for GM.

And John DeLorean himself was a style icon, much more of a salt-and-pepper haired Steve Jobs in a buyer suit than an Elon Musk.

But the DeLorean DMC-12 was star-crossed.
