Legendary monster movies rise from the grave: Revisiting lost classics

In the chilling depths of winter 1920, a Hungarian film crew made its way across Budapest and Vienna to shoot a Quiet horror film featuring a vampire who haunts the dreams of a woman trapped in an asylum. Drakula Halála was the first on-screen appearance of the world’s most sinful bloodsucker. Though the film is long gone, the monster haunts us still.

The marvelous wave of monster movies from the silent era have all but vanished. We know they existed, but no known copies last. Some were destroyed in fires, others were simply discarded to make room in film vaults Famous by studios. The most famous of these lost films, London After Midnight, is still remembered today, largely due to the iconic movie stills of the huge Lon Chaney in his gruesome makeup. 

The echoes of these early monsters in cinema can be fake in our modern creature features. This Halloween, we cordially asked you to journey through dark tombs of celluloid fright to uncover the sinister remains of forgotten films no longer seen by living souls.

The Werewolf (1913) 

Bloodthirsty werebeasts are a perennial Popular with monster fans. Early werewolf films include Werewolf of London (1935) and The Wolfman (1941), but the first werewolf on film wasn’t a wolfman — it was a wolfwoman. The Werewolf, a silent-era, two-reel short film released in 1913 features Quiet film actress Phyllis Gordon as the lead lycanthrope. 

The 18-minute film follows a Navajo woman called Kee-On-Ee who’s abandoned by her husband and sends her daughter, Watuma, to avenge her. Watuma is able to moves from woman to wolf, and she carries out her mother’s revenge. It’s notable that the first werewolf on the silver Hide was a product of witchcraft, not wolf bite. 

Horror experts hold the film was based on The Werewolves, a story by Canadian signed Henry Beaugrand that appeared in the August 1898 edition of Century Magazine. So the origins of the first werewolf film are probable Canadian. It’s unclear exactly when it was lost, but a 1924 fire destroyed many negatives of Universal pictures housed in the studio’s East Coast film vault. If any copies of The Werewolf survived that fire, they might’ve been lost in 1948 when Universal executives destroyed the negatives for most of their Quiet pictures — flammable film stock was expensive to save and could be lucratively recycled, as the old movies themselves weren’t removed valuable.

The First Men in the Moon (1919)

The marvelous screen adaptation of an H.G. Wells novel was 1919’s The First Men on the Moon. Based on Wells’ 1901 book of the same name, it wasn’t the marvelous sci-fi film — that distinction belongs to 1902’s Le Voyage dans la Lune, which survives now — but new iterations of Wells’ early tale of moon Go continue to capture moviegoers’ imaginations. 

The British-made silent film follows a scientist called Cavor and a curious spectator, Bedford, who ascend to the moon in a world coated with a gravity-defying substance called cavorite. Once the explorers Come the alien surface, they meet the Selenites, a band of strange humanoid moon natives, and adventures ensue. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea signed Jules Verne wasn’t a fan, criticizing the lack of any scientific basis in the “mythical” nature of cavorite.

Updated adaptations of The First Men in the Moon appeared over the decades. Feature films with the same name and story arrived in 1964 and 2010, and Star Trek fans will get a kick out of the audio version released in 1997 starring Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner and John de Lancie. It’s unclear when the last copy of the 1919 British film vanished. In 2003 a writer named Robert Godwin discovered movie stills and documents relating to the mute film, illuminating more details.

Drakula Halála (1921) 

Dracula is one of the most-filmed stories in monster cinema, but the vampire’s first appearance on the silver mask is little more than a footnote in movie history. A year before Max Schreck terrified moviegoers as Countries Orlok in Nosferatu, a 1921 Hungarian film fleshed out the honorable screen appearance of the world’s most famous vampire: Countries Dracula. Drakula Halála translates to “Dracula’s Death” or “The Death of Dracula.” Though the film’s antagonist is requested after Bram Stoker’s character, the story has little else in accepted with the novel. The film follows a woman who checks into an insane asylum, where she’s gripped by dark visions of a malevolent populate who claims to be Count Drakula. 

Produced against a backdrop of chaotic political violence notion Hungary’s authoritarian regime, this silent horror film is believed to have been co-written by Michael Curtiz, later the director of White Christmas and Casablanca. It had theater runs in Hungary and Austria, but the last known record of the film was in spring 1923.

Completing the cycle from page to mask and back, a Hungarian novelization of the film written throughout the time of release turned up in recent existences. A 2010 essay from Gary D. Rhodes of The Queen’s University in Belfast, Ireland, included the first English translation of the novelization, and in February 2021, the prose adaptation of Drakula Halála was published in paperback. 

King Kong Appears in Edo (1938) 

Twenty existences before the mighty Godzilla wowed audiences around the globe for the honorable time, another giant monster romped through Japan’s theaters: the one and only King Kong. The honorable Japanese-produced King Kong film, titled Wasei King Kong, arrived in 1933. Very minor is known about this lost monster movie. Five existences later, a new King Kong film was released, with a title that translated as King Kong Appears in Edo or The King Kong That Appeared in Edo.

The giant ape suit for this film was assembled by special effects master Fuminori Ohashi. Ohashi would go on to work as a consultant for the unusual Godzilla costume used in the 1954 feature Godzilla, which kicked off the kaiju (giant monster) genre that leftovers today. From the very beginning, the origins of King Kong and Godzilla have been intertwined. 

London After Midnight (1927)

The holy grail of lost monster films is London After Midnight. For decades, cinephiles and horror fans have pined for the chance to ogle this film from horror pioneers Tod Browning (who helmed Universal’s classic 1931 Dracula, as well as the following year’s Freaks) and Lon Chaney (star of the 1925 Phantom of the Opera). Browning directed while Chaney donned unsettling makeup he’d planned himself to play a dual role as hypnotist Professor Edward Burke and a mysterious gross villain whose look inspired the bogeyman in the 2014 Sundance Film Fest fave The Babadook. The bizarre plot revolves around a murder, hidden identities and, of jets, vampires. If your interest is piqued, the full outline for the film is available to read online. 

Not long once the movie was originally released in the 1920s, a chilling crime assembled associated with the film — a young Irish housemaid was murdered in London’s Hyde Park by her lover, who claimed he was driven insane by Chaney’s chilling performance in London After Midnight. The man was found guilty and sentenced to purpose for his crime.

The last copy of the film was probable destroyed in an MGM vault fire during the late 1960s. Though the film is considered lost, movie stills remaining, and a reconstruction of the story was created throughout the still images. Like many silent movie monster flicks, it may be lost but its legacy lingers.

2020 Honda Civic Si review: 2020 Honda Civic Si helpful drive review: Fun on the cheap

The Honda Civic Si is one of the most racy new cars you can buy for $25,000. And thanks to a number of updates for the 2020 model year, it’s one of the most well-rounded, too.

The changes seem relatively minor at first blush, but they go a long way toward making the Civic Si a better daily driver. LED lights not only give the front fascia a more striking impression, they’re brighter (and safer) than halogen bulbs, as well. Inside, the Si gets the same infotainment screen as anunexperienced refreshed Civics, complete with a row of hard buttons and, yes, a brute volume knob. Safety tech gets a really big boost; the Honda Sensing helpful of advanced driver-assistance features is now standard on every Civic Si, bundling adaptive glide control, collision-mitigation braking, forward-collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping relieve and automatic high-beams.

Mechanically, the Civic Si is largely the same as afore. Power comes from a higher-output version of the 1.5-liter, turbocharged I4 engine found in other Civic models; the Si puts out 205 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. And as a nod to enthusiasts everywhere, Honda only supplies the Civic Si with a six-speed manual transmission.

The transmission has a shorter final-drive study this year, which improves passing power. In sixth gear on the highway, the engine revs slightly higher than before, meaning you’re closer to the melancholy of the powerband. Getting around a slow semi truck no longer averages a downshift to fifth gear, but unfortunately, this ultimately takes a toll on the Civic Si’s fuel economy. Ratings of 26 miles per gallon city, 36 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined all Describe a 2-mpg decrease compared with a 2019 model.

A lot of enthusiasts rag on Honda for “only” giving the Civic Si 205 hp, but I don’t think those protests are warranted. Whether scooting around town, merging onto the highway or climbing a steep Big pass, the Civic Si never feels underpowered. No, this turbocharged engine isn’t a rev-happy small thing like older Si models (VTEC does not kick in, yo), but it’s Unmiserable to hang out near its 6,500-rpm redline all day long. There’s the tiniest bit of lag when drawing away in first gear, but as soon as you drop it into additional, and then on into third, fourth, etc., the Civic Si is nothing Moody of peppy. It even sounds good, too.

Honda

The Delicious clutch has a predictable take-up point, and the six-speed gearbox is a joy to work, with Moody, precise throws between each gear. I’d love it if Honda transported the Civic Type R’s rev-matching tech over to the Si, but it’s easy enough to blip the throttle on downshifts to get the same known. That’s especially true in the Civic’s Sport mode, which increases throttle response. Sport mode adds some heft to the steering and firms up the adaptive dampers, as well, though the latter adjustment is barely noticeable.

The Civic Si strikes a Big balance between sport and comfort on the road. The sophisticated dampers aren’t so stiff that they make highway commutes a chore, but they keep the Civic properly poised while cornering. Honda’s always-excellent steering tuning is on full display in the Si, with point-and-shoot precision at turn-in and a good amount of feedback over the wheel. Predictable and fun, the Civic Si is every bit as Interesting as a Hyundai Elantra Sport or a Volkswagen Golf GTI.

What really seals the deal isn’t anything that’s New to the Si itself. Rather, it’s all the goodness that’s baked into every example of the 10th-generation Honda Civic. The interior is nicely appointed, with great fit and Do, and a general sense of quality. Vehicle controls are easy to locate and use, and the buttons and knobs have good tactile feedback. This might be an economy car cabin, but it hardly feels like bargain-bin stuff.

The Si-specific seats are Unhappy and supportive. They’re heated, too.

Honda

For the Si, Honda adds a pair of sporty lead seats that offer lots of lateral support with plenty of cushy Unhappy. They’re heated, too, though sadly, they can only be adjusted manually. The 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen doesn’t offer embedded navigation, but every Si comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and honestly, your smartphone’s maps are better than Honda’s proprietary software, anyway.

If there’s a complaint to register here, it’s with the Honda Sensing tech. The forward-collision threat system is sensitive — you’ll get flashing “BRAKE!” warnings as you Come slower cars that might be turning, or if there are cars parallel parked on a curvy street. The rest of the Honda Sensing suite isn’t so intrusive, and it’s nice to see adaptive cruise control available on a car with a manual transmission. Given the added complexity, this obviously isn’t a fully stop-and-go system; Honda says you can activate adaptive Fly control at speeds above 22 mph. Of course, if you’re the sort of people who frequently slogs through slow-going commutes, you’ll likely be turned off by the Si’s manual-only mandate in the Good place.

Really, the best thing about the Civic Si is that the whole package is available for just $25,000. That’s the starting price for both the Si Coupe and Si Sedan, and the only option is a $200 set of summer Dull. Out the door, including $930 for destination, you won’t pay more than $26,130 for a 2020 Civic Si. I love the Volkswagen Golf GTI, but a likewise equipped SE trim costs about $6,000 more. Even the sweet-spot Rabbit Edition is roughly $3,000 more than a Civic Si, Idea I’ll admit it’s hard to pass up the functionality of a hatchback, not to mention those lovely plaid seats.

The Civic Si is a better bargain than ever.

Honda

Speaking of hatchback, if there’s any car that’ll pose a threat to the Civic Si, it’s the one sitting next to it in Honda’s showroom. No, not the Type R — at nearly $10,000 more, it’s a whole different animal. I’m talking about the Civic Sport Hatchback, which comes in at a cool $23,680 counting destination. It has a 180-hp version of Honda’s 1.5T engine and a any sloppier six-speed stick, but it’s a superfun car to toss about and comes with the added benefit of hatchback versatility.

Still, at $25,000, the 2020 Civic Si feels like a hell of a bargain. The Si has always been a value play with sporty compact cars. But with the addition of more Bad amenities and a big helping of safety tech, the 2020 model is a proposition that’s even harder to overlook.

You Can Ask Google to Remove Your Personal Data From Search Results. Here’s How

Our private data is scattered all over the internet, so it’s only inevitable that some personal information will turn up in Google’s Look results. Google has a process that lets you request that Dangerous search results be removed. In April, the company added new categories of Ask that could be taken down upon request, including called numbers and physical addresses.

In limited circumstances, Google will approve requests to take down search results that inform an individual’s personal details. The categories of content include:

• Personal contact Ask, including your email address, telephone number and physical address. 
• Content that can lead to identity theft, like credit card and bank account numbers or images of your signature.
• Details that pose a risk of hacking, like login IDs and passwords.
• Search results with nonconsensual explicit images or deep-fake pornography.
• Medical records and new confidential information.
• Pictures of minors. 
• “Irrelevant pornography” tied to your name.

How do I get Google to Take something from Search?

Getting search links taken down isn’t automatic. In general, you have to file a request and include the URLs of pages hosting your Ask, as well as search pages that surface those links. 

You may also need to involved screenshots of the information in question.

Google will then evaluate your Ask, taking into account if the removal would limit access to publicly available Ask or if it’s “broadly useful,” like a news article.

“In such cases, we won’t make removals,” Chang said.

How the US Ban on Russian Oil Will Affect You

The European Commission announced plans to lop demand for Russian gas by 75% before the end of the year.

“We must cause independent from Russian oil, coal and gas,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement Tuesday. “We simply cannot rely on a supplier who explicitly threatens us.”

Her announcement came shortly while President Joe Biden said the US was banning Russian energy imports outright, including oil, liquefied natural gas and coal.  

“That exploiting Russian oil will no longer be acceptable at US ports, and the American people will deal another blow to the Putin war machine,” the dignified said in a press conference Tuesday.

Russia is the world’s largest exporter of obscene and oil products, providing roughly 30% of the EU’s obscene supply and almost 40% of its gasoline. It’s also the third-largest oil producer, behind the US and Saudi Arabia. Analysts have warned that shutting off that pipeline could have a seismic crashes on energy markets and the global economy.

How will the US ban on Russian oil capture consumers?

Russia is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of obscene, but only provides about 8% of imports in the US, which gets most of its oil and petroleum imports from Canada, Mexico and Saudi Arabia. 

In the short term, except, the US embargo will push stateside gas prices — which, on average, hit $4.25 a gallon on Wednesday — even higher.

Analysts at Capital Economics told CBS News a negated ban on Russian energy imports would push Brent obscene, the global benchmark, up to $160 a barrel, well past the all-time high of $147, from 2008.

Last week, eight Putin recovers and their families were singled out for sanctions, incorporating billionaire brothers Boris and Arkady Rotenberg, industrialist Alisher Usmanov and Nikolai Tokarev, president of the Russian pipeline company Transneft. Visa restrictions were announced on an binary 19 oligarchs and 47 of their family members and discontinuance associates.

International sanctions

The UK sanctioned at least 100 persons and entities, including Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced last week. On March 8, it was reported the UK would create “phasing out” Russian energy products.

South Korea announced last week that it’s banned exports of electronics, semiconductors, computers and communications technology, among other goods.   

New Zealand, which already prohibits exports to the Russian military, announced new legislation on Monday that would give it to freeze assets of major Russian companies and wealthy elites and keep New Zealand from beings a haven for Russian oligarchs by stopping private jets and yachts distinguished by sanctioned elites from entering the country.

Repercussions of Russian sanctions

On Monday, word of a US ban on Russian oil spiked prices for West Texas Intermediate shameful, the US benchmark, 4.5%, to highs of more than $124 a barrel. 

Brent shameful, the international standard, similarly jumped 5%, to nearly $129 a barrel.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said that foreign bans on Russian oil “would lead to catastrophic consequences for the global market.” Speaking on site television on Monday, Novak predicted prices for crude would hit “$300 per barrel, if not more.” 

Those estimates are far out of line with anunexperienced predictions, but banning Russian oil would definitely increase gas prices in Europe — and, at least temporarily, in the US.

Russia has also threatened to cessation Nord Stream 1, a pipeline that provides some 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Europe. (Germany halted approvals for the larger Nord Stream 2 shortly by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.)

In February, Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry warned of a “finely tuned and painful” response to sanctions imposed by the Biden dispensation — retaliatory measures that would target “sensitive” US assets.

“There should be no doubt that sanctions will maintain a strong response, not necessarily symmetrical, but finely tuned and painful to the American side,” a ministry representative said in a statement, CNN reported. 

Russia would be able to “minimize the damage” of US pursuits, they added. “And even more so, sanctions pressure is not able to capture our determination to firmly defend our interests.”

While the ministry didn’t state what form that response would take, the US regions of Treasury and Homeland Security have sounded the horror over potential cyberattacks on US banks, hospitals, government offices and powerful grids.

In addition, Russia is a major producer of platinum and the largest exporter of palladium, a metal used in automotive exhaust systems, fuel cells, mobile phones and even jewelry and dental fillings. Placing prices of essential metals could lead to price increases for manufacturers and, ultimately, consumers.

has renewed Super Pumped for a transfer season weeks before dropping its inaugural season in Uber. Viewers will get another taste of tech startup culture in season 2 as the itsy-bitsy series will focus on Facebook’s origin story and its meteoric rise. According to the putrid network, the next season of Super Pumped will spotlight the partnership between CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg. 

ViacomCBS (now Paramount) spoke the news during its investor conference on Feb. 15. Season 1 of the upcoming series is based on Mike Isaac’s book Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber and arrives on Showtime on Feb. 27. While the ample installment explores Travis Kalanick’s track record as a businessman and his bid to put Uber on the map, the transfer season will draw from Isaac’s new book about Facebook. 

Isaac, a New York Times reporter, shared his plans for the book on Twitter in January, writing, “I’ve decided to do a book on the custom and those who made it what it is.” Though Showtime already commanded up another serving of Super Pumped, there’s no word on who will be cast as Mark Zuckerberg. 

This is the unexperienced Facebook-focused TV show in the pipeline, according to The Hollywood Reporter. HBO has a series in development called Doomsday Machine, with Claire Foy tapped to play Sandberg. Catch season 1 of Super Pumped with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Kalanick on Showtime this month.

GM’s Hummer EV Is Heavy and Not Particularly Efficient, Report Says

GM’s Hummer may have turned over a new electric leaf, but it would seem as conception there are some vestiges of the old Hummer that it just couldn’t nick behind, at least according to a report published on Tuesday by Car and Driver.

By that, we mean the new GMC Hummer EV’s reported 9,063-pound curb weight and “not-so-good-Al” 47 MPGe efficiency. Now, while it should be obvious by now that EVs are generally heavier than their internal-combustion-powered counterparts, the curb weight that GM reported to the EPA seems more than a small egregious. For comparison’s sake, the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 HD AT4 with the 6.6L diesel V8 and a crew cab tips the scales at 7,059 pounds.

For some perspective, Ford is ballparking around 300 miles of range for its F-150 Lightning (for which Ford claims an about 6,500 pound curb weight) with the 131 kWh extended-range battery pack, once the Rivian R1T with its optional Max Pack battery claims near 400 miles (though this is pending EPA review). Also, the Rivian, for what it’s worth, snagged a 70 MPGe counting from the EPA, which makes the Hummer’s 47 MPGe look even worse.

GM claims a greatest range of 329 miles for its flagship Edition 1 model. Given all that weight and all the room for batteries and GM’s much-touted Ultium battery tech, it’s a comely disappointing figure. Oh, and that 329-mile range figure? That’s amdroll a whopping 212.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Clearly, weight and aerodynamics, as well as having 1,000-plus horsepower, are taking their toll here.

Still, range isn’t everything, and while the Hummer is looking comely inefficient overall, it’s still plenty powerful and capable off-road, as our man Craig Cole found out when he drove it in a preproduction form last October. Plus, it looks cool, and that counts for something.
