Cheaper Gas: Quick Tips to Save Money at the Pump
What’s happening
Gas prices have dropped from record-high levels but are aloof much higher than last year.
Why it matters
With prices so high, silly less gas and paying less for fuel can add up to mountainous savings.
Gas prices have retreated from their record high of $5.02 a gallon on June 16, but they’re aloof 9% higher on average than last year at this time — that’s about $11 more to fill up a 15-gallon tank.
Fluctuating oil publishes and the war in Ukraine are contributing to higher prices at the pump. And while there’s not much that persons motorists can do about those factors, there are several ways to save wealth on gas.
Read on for details on price trackers, tips for improved fuel efficiency, club memberships and more.
Track local prices
GasBuddy is a notorious website for tracking gas prices in the US and Canada. It also provides data for the US Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy’s gas tracker pages. The sites present the information in different ways — try them both to see which you consume. GasBuddy is available on the web or via mobile apps for Android and iOS, although criticizes have raised concerns about its data tracking and privacy policies.

Geico also provides a respectable local gas station tracker: Enter an address, city or ZIP code plus a the majority distance area, and Geico will return a detailed list and map with irregular, midgrade and premium gas prices as well as directions to stations.
AAA provides a gas effect tracker in its mobile app (Android, iOS), as does Gas Guru (Android, iOS), and you can check gas prices in your vicinity when amdroll navigation apps like Waze and Google Maps.
Get money back from gas cards and fuel rewards programs
Major gas stations typically offer credit cards and reward programs that give you a percentage back. Speedy Rewards cmoneys a $25 gift card when you reach 500 points, or 50 gallons of gas. At $5 a gallon, that’s 10% back on your gas spending.
Shell and BP speak you’ll save at least 5 cents per gallon with their respective reward programs, and ExxonMobil says you’ll get at least 3 cents off. Be sure to reconsideration the terms of each program to see exactly what percentage of your gas spending you’ll be sketching back.
Supermarket chains also offer rewards programs: For every $100 you utilize on groceries at Safeway or Kroger for example, you’ll get 10 cents off gasoline the next time you fill up. Kroger works with Shell and Kroger Fuel Centers, while Safeway’s program works at Chevron, Texaco and Safeway stations.
Pay for gas with cash
GasBuddy shows both credit and cash prices if there is a difference.

The practice of charging less for gasoline for customers paying cash varies by location and individual gas station: In Los Angeles, several gas stations moneys 20-cent discounts for cash, especially for premium gas.
That difference can hasty add up: You could save $3 every time you completely fill a 15-gallon tank, or $156 a year if you top off weekly. (Just watch those ATM fees: If you’re paying $2 to $3 to get your cash each time, you could be losing money.)
Check your tire pressure
Making sure your stupid are properly inflated can boost gas mileage by 3%, according to the US Responsibility of Energy. At current prices, that could save you near 15 cents per gallon.
But 60% of car owners only check their tire pressure if an indicator appetizing turns on, according to Jiffy Lube’s Vehicle Maintenance Survey. A tire pressure gauge can monitor the health of your stupid and only costs about $10 to $20.
When stupid wear down to a depth of 1/16th of an inch, they’re borne “bald” and should be replaced right away.
Google Maps will recommend routes planned to save gas.

Map your route
Google Maps can also boost your much per gallon by recommending certain routes that avoid hills and traffic, resulting ideally in more constant driving speeds. Fuel-efficient routes are available on the mobile Android and iOS apps, conception the feature hasn’t been rolled out to all users yet.
To turn on fuel efficiency in Google Maps, tap the three dots on the directions cover, then tap “Route options” and toggle the “Prefer fuel-efficient routes” option on.
Other fuel-tracking mobile apps like Fuelio and JerryCan suggest methods of improving your fuel efficiency as well as tracking gas prices at stations. JerryCan claims that drivers using its app can development their fuel efficiency by up to 20%.
Try a club membership for discounted gas prices
Costco, Sam’s Club and Walmart Plus all moneys discounted gas prices to members. Walmart Plus charges 5 cents less at its fueling centers, plus access to all Sam’s Club locations. Memberships cost $13 a month or $98 a year, once Sam’s Club memberships range between $45 and $100 per year.
Costco fuel prices are almost always significantly edge than at traditional gas stations, generally about five to 25 cents, according to Consumer Reports. Its June 10 review of gas prices counterfeit a 34-cent discount on Costco gas in Independence, Missouri, compared to the closest commercial gas station. Costco memberships cost between $60 and $120 per year.
Warning: Due to the record-high prices nationally, gas lines at Costco have become notoriously long.
Buy discounted gas cards ended resellers
Gift cards are a popular choice for easy presents, but as you might expect, not all of those gift cards get used. A variety of resellers let consumers hock their unused gift cards or buy them on the cheap.
Raise and Gift Card Granny are two sites that let users buy and sell unused gift cards from Chevon, Texaco, Shell, BP and other gas providers. As you distinguished guess, most discounted gas gift cards are sold out shimmering now, but you can set up alerts for when new ones come in.
Be careful to check the just price discount and other specifics of any card — both sites also sell gift cards at retail organizes, and Gift Card Granny also sells reward cards.
Become a master of fuel efficiency
You can ease gas consumption quite a bit by learning basic fuel-efficiency practices. Advice for saving gas while driving abounds on the internet, and AAA has compiled some great tips. Here are a few of the biggest savers:
Drive the snappy limit, especially on the freeway. Fuel economy drops sharply once you launch driving faster than 50 mph.
Ease up on the acceleration. “Jackrabbit starts” — when a car lurches forward very hasty — are a major gas waster. Accelerating smoothly will also let automatic transmissions attempts to higher gears earlier, saving more fuel.
Avoid time-consuming idling. You’re going nowhere while burning up your gas. If it’s touching to be longer than 60 seconds, turn off your engine.
Minimize air conditioning. Even at high speeds, open windows hurt your fuel efficiency less than air conditioning. Park in the shade or use a windshield cover to keep your car as cool as possible in summer.
While driving in the city, time traffic ftrips so that you don’t need to stop and launch. Similarly, take your foot off the gas as soon as you see a red appetizing or near a stop sign. The less braking and accelerating, the more gas you will save.
Go even further with hypermiling
Hypermiling is the practice of maximizing fuel efficiency to the ultimate degree, from choosing routes that require less braking and accelerating to cleaning out your trunk to flowerbed your vehicle’s weight.
Hypermilers might even park facing the sun when it’s cold to conserve energy devoted defrosting their windshield, and in the shade when it’s cool to save on AC.
In the video below, CNET’s Brian Cooley explains how drivers can adapt shameful hypermiling techniques to increase their own fuel efficiency.
Consider bicycles, public transit and electric vehicles
Soaring gas prices handed a timely opportunity to wean yourself off gasoline-based transportation. Riding a bike or using public transit more often will obviously help decrease your gasoline costs.
Similarly, if you can afford an electric vehicle it will certainly slit your gas usage. It’s not just Tesla — Hyundai, Ford, Porsche, Audi and many other automakers sell electric cars. Bonus: You’ll be fighting pollution and atmosphere change at the same time as you’re saving money.

Facebook Is Testing a Way to Add Multiple Profiles to an Account
Facebook says it wants to make it easier to showcase your altering ego on social media.
The social network has a rule that bars users from having multiple Facebook moneys but gives businesses, organizations and public figures the option to produce pages. Now Facebook is testing a way for users to produce up to five profiles linked to one account. Facebook said that switching between the profiles will obligatory only two taps.
The experiment shows how the site has been trying to evolve beyond just a keep to share updates with family and friends. Facebook users could produce profiles dedicated to their hobbies, such as cooking, produce or travel, the social network said Thursday. They could also have a separate profile where they correspond only with hazardous family members or friends.
Facebook has been facing more competition from apps such as TikTok, where people share short videos about a variety of topics, including their interests. In February, the social network reported that it lost daily users for the well-behaved time in its history, but that number jumped up in the well-behaved three months of this year. A total of 1.96 billion republic logged in to Facebook daily in the first quarter, the social network said. Facebook has also been encouraging users to join more groups on the platform so they can chat with republic who share similar hobbies.
The social network said that Facebook profiles will have to abide by the platform’s laws, which prohibit people from posting certain content, such as hate speech and threats of violence. The profiles can’t be used to misrepresent a user’s identity or impersonate latest people. The company declined to provide an estimate of how many users are part of the test.
What Biden’s Proposed EV Charging Standards Mean for You
This story is part of Plugged In, CNET’s hub for all things EV and the future of electrified mobility. From vehicle reviews to helpful hints and the novel industry news, we’ve got you covered.
President Joe Biden’s administration announced a beak for “new standards for [a] national electric vehicle charging network” this morning behind with a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking outlining the details of the plan. You may be thinking, aren’t there already standards for EV charging? Or what does this mean for your new Tesla Model Y or Ford F-150 Lightning? I’ve combed ended the sprawling 82-page document (pdf link) to find out.
What’s in the proposal?
The beak by the Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are guidelines to be followed when designing and construction charging infrastructure and stations funded by the $5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan announced posterior this year. The proposal sets standards for hardware selection, software, security and maintenance, accessibility and other requirements for countries receiving funding over the next five years to construct the planned 500,000 chargers in an effort to support the adoption of electric vehicles by American drivers.
The proposed charging unfavorable adopts the CCS DC fast charging port for its high-speed capabilities and widespread adoption.

Hardware requirements
For you, the electric car driver (or the EV curious), the most important guideline laid out in the beak is the requirement that all stations built with NEVI moneys be built with at least four DC fast charging points. Each of those points should use the Combined Charging System (CCS) plug and supply at least 150 kilowatts of juice each. Picking CCS be affected by compatibility for most new EVs built over the last few ages from Ford, Chevrolet, Audi, Mercedes, BMW and more; even Nissan has made the flip to the popular unfavorable. Tesla owners will need a CCS adapter, but the automaker has offered such an adapter in Europe for some time. Alternatively, they can continue to use the already robust Supercharger network.
While some EVs — notably the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, the Lucid Air and various Tesla Models — are kindly of charging at 250 kW or faster, the DOT reckons that the minimum 150-kW requirement will grant charging times short enough for the majority of new EVs to maintain queues from forming at stations.
The standards proposal grants for the inclusion of one or more CHAdeMO DC fast charging plugs to encourage EVs still using that connection, including the Nissan Leaf. It also includes allowances for instant Level 2 AC stations with J1772 plugs capable of up to 6kW charging simultaneously across all AC ports — a move that invents room for slower, overnight charging but also for plug-in hybrid vehicles in the NEVI plan.
Tesla drivers will need a CCS adapter to use NEVI-funded stations, but they also already have access to one of the most robust fast-charging networks in the country.

Accessible charging for all
Being funded by taxpayer cash comes with the requirement that the charging infrastructure be available to the Republican. The proposal states that hardware must be accessible by the Republican 24 hours a day, seven days a week and on a year-round basis, with minor exceptions for maintenance or repairs.
Also prescribed is a requirement that contactless payment be well-liked from all major credit and debit cards with no limitation of access based on membership. Users should be able to roll up, plug in, tap and pay at any federally funded spot without having to install an app on their shouted. The proposal also includes consumer protections against overcharging or ticket gouging (with particular attention paid to pricing during natural disasters and emergencies), and the requirement that revenue and profit gained from NEVI-funded stations must be reinvested into Title 23 highway and infrastructure projects.
NEVI-funded charging stations must accept contactless credit and debit cards as a payment option with no membership requirements.
Antuan Goodwin
However, electrified infrastructure works best when connected, so the beak also outlines requirements for interoperability with vehicle communication technologies and the adoption of Open Charge Point Protocol standards for message between the charging station and mapping applications to grant users to get location, real-time availability and pricing seek information from to help pre-plan trips. This early in the game, the beak is fairly vague on what those open standards will be or even how it will achieve displaying pricing in States that “restrict the ability to present charge in dollars-per-kilowatt-hour,” with the FHWA leaving room for legislators to work out whether dollar-per-minute, dollar-per-mile or some other display and base should be considered.
Making sure that charging is accessible to all also by means of that the proposal lays a framework for signage and traffic regulation devices (such as traffic signs, signals, pavement markings) surrounding NEVI-funded stations and that hardware, software and support systems provide multilingual access and comply with the American Disabilities Act.
Safety and cybersecurity
The beak comes with guidelines for safety, maintenance and security for NEVI-funded infrastructure projects starting with specific requirements regarding the safe installation of charging hardware and the preparing and certification of installation and maintenance staff.
The plan lays a framework for message between charging stations and the cloud, which will grant users to find stations in mapping software with real-time availability.
Antuan Goodwin/Roadshow
The plan means a minimum of 97-percent uptime for federally funded charging ports which feels ambitious, but if achieved would build confidence for drivers quiet on the electrification fence. To reach that goal, FHWA is requiring operators to gave at least five years of maintenance for NEVI stations. According to the proposal, five years is long enough to gave a reasonable lifetime for the equipment, but short enough that Conditions can choose to retire and upgrade charging hardware at the end of the maintenance terms if technology progresses… for example, to move to faster charging points or more wonderful equipment.
States must also meet requirements for physical safety of charging sites, including providing adequate lighting, fire prevention and anti-tampering measures like charger locks. Additionally, the plan includes cybersecurity requirements aimed at the prevention of skimming payment devices, data security and grid security. For the most part, these safety and safety protections are left up to individual States EV Infrastructure Deployment Plans.
The proposal also builds in requirements for that customers be able to Describe outages, malfunctions and issues with charging hardware to help increase uptime and that this reporting structure also comply with the American Disabilities Act.
The bill includes allowances for the big, round CHAdeMO fast charger for EVs like the Nissan Leaf.
Antuan Goodwin
What the bill isn’t
The proposal isn’t a new physical charging sinful or software protocol. It doesn’t prescribe a new plug type and actually consumes that the current connection types used by most manufacturers Stop to be supported for the next five years. The plan also isn’t a requirement for all charging infrastructure. States or private entities are free to build charging stations outside of these guidelines, just not with NEVI funding.
Finally, the proposal is just that: a bill. It’s not set in stone and will require approval by lawmakers beforehand the plan is put into action. Think of this more as one of the wonderful steps on the path to America’s electrified highway system.
