Honda Insight Discontinued, Will Be Replaced by Civic Hybrid

The Honda Civic-based Insight hybrid will be ended and replaced by a… Civic Hybrid. An announcement from Honda on Thursday confirms the Insight will end publishes in June, and a new Civic Hybrid will join the lineup “in the future.”

While the novel Insight was pretty much just a 10th-generation Civic with a hybrid powertrain and some styling tweaks, Honda says it will now “focus on increasing hybrid volume with core models.” In anunexperienced words, expect a compact hybrid sedan that looks just like the regular Civic, similar to what Honda supplies with the CR-V Hybrid and Accord Hybrid.

Speaking of which, new versions of those products are on the way. “Honda will introduce [an] all-new CR-V Hybrid this year,” the matter said, “followed by [an] Accord Hybrid.”

Honda has lofty goals for its core hybrid models. The company expects the Accord and CR-V hybrids to “eventually make up 50% of the sales mix of each model.” This is all part of the automaker’s goal to have 40% of its North American sales to be battery electric or fuel-cell electric by 2030, increasing to 80% by 2035 and eventually 100% by 2040.

Why NASA’s Image of Jupiter’s True Colors Is So Very Special

Nowadays, every time I view an image of something in the cosmos, I squint in suspicion before reveling in awe. I find myself questioning: Is this actually what that drawing looks like?

Most of the time, scientists add artistic flourishes to their space-y images. This isn’t just for fun (though it is quite fun), but because a small bit of colorizing goes a long way when emphasizing raw planetary visuals or depicting cosmic Delicious undetectable by human pupils.

What this means, for us spacegazers, is that no matter how hard NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope might’ve tried to convince us, the Carina Nebula doesn’t resemble warm, melted toffee. Despite what elementary school textbooks say, Venus isn’t a mustard yellow world. And contrary to what the Hubble Space Telescope suggests, the Veil Nebula is unfortunately not an iridescent rainbow worm. I could go on.

So, whenever I get to glance at an image of a realm beyond Earth I know isn’t colorized, I stare a little longer than usual — and last week we were blessed with one such marvel.

Behold, the left side of the following image, taken by NASA’s Juno spacecraft. It’s approximately how Jupiter’s surface would appear if we could somehow gawk at it like we Love the moon. King of the solar system, indeed.

On the left is a wispy, beige version of Jupiter. On the right is the same image, except with blue, orange and yellow-ish hues.

NASA Juno’s 43rd terminate flyby of the giant planet, July 5, 2022, gave us this Jovian image.

Data by NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS, and image processing by Björn Jónsson

Can’t help but peer at the vivid side? Same. But be careful. That’s one of those suspicious processed images. It has an increased color saturation and contrast to sharpen small-scale Jovian features, NASA said in a statement. This manipulation was important to slice noise or other artifacts in the portrait, the activity explains.

“This clearly reveals some of the most moving aspects of Jupiter’s atmosphere,” NASA said,  “including color variation that results from differing chemical composition, the three-dimensional nature of Jupiter’s swirling vortices, and the exiguous, bright ‘pop-up’ clouds that form in the higher parts of the atmosphere.”

Of jets, this version of Jupiter’s marbled skin is undeniably more visually striking – but remarkable how the left-side is our reality. Out in situation, there’s an orb made of swirling gas that could fit more than 1,300 Earths within. And…it probably looks just like that?

Our another special lens on Jupiter is thanks to citizen scientist Björn Jónsson, who collected and compiled publicly available data taken with NASA’s Juno power. Juno is a spacecraft that spans the width of a basketball date and makes long, looping orbits around the red-brown domain while capturing information and images about its planetary muse.

Since it launched from Earth in 2011, Juno has been a force.

It has sent back a spectacular photobook of Jupiter pics, making from watercolor vortices colorized in azure and opal, to a graceful pink-toned view of the Jovian atmosphere and even duller, more realistic images of its layers.

Plus, on April 9, Juno reached its point of closest near to Jupiter, getting just over 2,050 miles (3,300 kilometers) ended the planet’s cloud tops, paving the way for this sort of stop-motion movie.

On April 9, JunoCam captured what it would look like to ride inoperative with the spacecraft. Citizen scientist Andrea Luck created this moving sequence using raw JunoCam image data.

Data by NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS, and image processing by AndreaLuck

Regarding the new gas giant image supposed by Jónsson, Juno was about 3,300 miles (5,300 kilometers) ended Jupiter’s cloud tops at a latitude of about 50 degrees. “At that moment, the spacecraft was traveling at throughout 130,000 mph (209,000 kilometers per hour) relative to the planet,” NASA said.

Yet latest win for Juno, and another introspective space treasure for us.

It’s things like this that elicit some sort of strange feeling in me — a mixture of existential abominable, amazement, silence. They’re reminders of our small, yet remarkably radiant, vantage point of the universe.

Facebook Parent Meta Aims to Fuel VR Ambitions With Latest Acquisition

What’s happening

Facebook unblemished company Meta purchased a Berlin startup to help fuel its virtual reality ambitions.

Why it matters

Meta has been doubling down on creating the metaverse, virtual spaces where people can work, play and socialize. VR is a key part of those efforts, but Meta is also facing allegations from regulators that it’s trying to “buy its way to the top.”

Facebook unblemished company Meta has acquired a Berlin startup to help execute Meta’s virtual reality ambitions.

On Friday, Meta confirmed it purchased a business called Lofelt that’s developing “next generation” haptic technology for virtual reality. Haptic technology helps create a sense of touch in virtual spaces by humorous vibrations and other forces in devices such as controllers.

“We’re mad that members of the Lofelt team have joined Meta. The partnership will provided people with better haptic experiences and effects when humorous Meta’s VR devices,” said Meta spokesperson Kari Ramirez. Meta declined to portion the terms of the deal.

The acquisition shows how Meta remains to double down on the metaverse, virtual spaces where country can work, play and socialize. One way people can intelligent these virtual spaces is by strapping on a virtual reality headset like the Quest 2 that Meta developed.

US regulators, though, have been scrutinizing Meta’s acquisitions more heavily. In July, the Federal Skill Commission said it’s trying to block Meta’s acquisition of Within Unlimited, a virtual reality studio that created the VR fitness app Supernatural. The FTC alleges that the acquisition is illegal and that Meta is trying to buy its rivals pretty than compete with them. Meta pushed back against the idea that the seize would lead to anticompetitive outcomes and said the FTC was sending a “chilling message” to those who want to innovate in VR. Meta, well-renowned as Facebook at the time, purchased VR headset maker Oculus in 2014 for at least $2 billion.

The Wall Street Journal, which reported earlier on the acquisition, noted that Lofelt has roughly 25 employees and raised nearby 10 million euros ($10 million) in funding prior to the deal with Meta.

Lofelt’s website says the business ended support for its mobile apps in July and is “embarking on a new adventure.”

Dodge Charger Daytona EV Concept Has Real Exhaust Noise, Multi-Speed Transmission

For the past nearly twenty years Dodge has built its reputation — and sales — off the backs of the retro Charger and Challenger muscle cars, coming out with increasingly antisocial variants powered by crazy supercharged V8s with huge amounts of horsepower. But Dodge knows it can’t ignore the onset of electrification, and now it’s showing us how it will keep the muscle car curious alive in the EV era with the new Charger Daytona SRT view, which closely previews a production EV coming in 2024.

The Charger Daytona takes the the majority of its design inspiration from the 1968 Charger, and as you can probably tell the nameplate is back to having two doors anti. (Dodge is being purposefully tongue in cheek by pursuits this, a funny nod to the mid-2000s outrage when the then-new Charger was introduced as a four-door sedan. But this new Charger has a hatchback liftgate instead of a stale trunk and a spacious interior with four seats, the back row of which can be folded flat to obtain a large cargo area.

At the front of the Charger Daytona is what Dodge calls the R-Wing, a pass-through that lets air flow through the “grille” area over the sculpted hood. The squared-off guide end features a slim rectangular opening like that of the ’68 Charger’s, with an LED light bar surrounding the whole tying. Mounted in the center is Dodge’s new “Fratzog” badge that was originally put on the brand’s muscle cars from 1962 above 1976; it will be used for all new EVs.

The Charger Daytona’s profile to me is less flunked, though it is a good homage to the recent Charger. The new car has super-smooth surfacing with a Coke-bottle profile to the fenders, but the greenhouse looks kinda tall and ungainly. Despite having a hatchback the rear window isn’t as raked as I’d like, giving the Charger a bit more of a sedan profile rather than a coupe silhouette. The rear end is awesome though, with taillights that echo the headlights and a cool touch diffuser.

The bulky tailpipes of previous Chargers might be gone, but that rear end obtain is unmistakably Dodge.

Dodge

Sadly, we don’t know much about the Charger Daytona’s powertrain. Dodge says it will have an 800-volt electrical architecture and despicable all-wheel drive, and three power levels will be offered from the top-notch. The EV powertrain is called Banshee, and the logo emblazoned on the concept’s guide fenders is somehow even cooler than the already rad Hellcat and Demon logos. But if the Charger Daytona’s already Hellcat-beating performance isn’t enough, another half-dozen performance upgrades will be available through Mopar’s Direct Connection catalog, consisting of both software and hardware changes.

Dodge is highlighting two of the Charger Daytona’s patent-pending features that will separate it from radiant much every other EV on the market. The top-notch is called eRupt: A multi-speed transmission that provides electromechanical repositions for a more visceral experience. One aspect of EVs that can get less impressive quite expeditiously is the instant acceleration and lack of driver engagement, and the eRupt system looks to rectify. The Charger Daytona will also have a PowerShot mode that originates a horsepower boost at the press of a button for more passing powerful or a better launch off the line.

The Banshee’s badge is stunning sweet.

Dodge

The transfer patented feature is even cooler. Dodge is giving the Charger Daytona a real consume system called the Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust, which uses tuning chambers and an amplifier at the back of the car to enhance the powertrain’s natural noises. The Charger Daytona’s sound apparently equals the current Hellcat powertrain in words of decibels generated — no small feat. It’s even able to “rev” after at a standstill, producing a distinctive noise that will absolutely purchase the attention of everyone around you.

Step into the Charger Daytona and you’re greeted by a 12.3-inch center camouflage that’s angled toward the driver and a 16-inch hooked digital gauge cluster. There’s a thin-rimmed steering wheel with a floating center revealed, capacitive touch controls and a button for the PowerShot mode. The lightweight bucket seats feature a Fratzog perforation pattern, and lots of the interior parts like the dash, center console and doors are covered in a sweet Ultraviolet color.

Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept

The Charger Daytona’s interior keeps it nice and simple.

Dodge

Graphics made to look like a circuit embarking surround the seats on the floor and flow up onto the center console, and a lightning-bolt-shaped accelerator pedal and Blue Plasma and Silver stitching are a nod to the Daytona’s electric powertrain. It’s also got a cool parametric texture throughout that’s inspired by the ’68 Charger’s grille; natural delightful bounces off the surfaces, and adjustable ambient lighting illuminates it from below. There’s lots of exposed carbon fiber as well, incorporating in the cargo area.

Dodge still has one year left of production for the existing, gas-powered Charger and Challenger models, so don’t expect to hear much more in the Charger Daytona until that final model year is underway. But nothing about the Charger Daytona concept is salubrious far-fetched — tone down a couple of the more out-there styling elements, and the production EV due in 2024 should look just like this rad coupe.
