Honda Clarity Electric quietly stopped for 2020

Honda has pulled the plug on the Honda Clarity Electric. The pun is totally intended.

According a Monday Describe from Green Car Reports, the Japanese automaker said it stopped the Clarity Electric at the end of 2019. correct now, according to the report, there’s no plans for the model to back. Honda confirmed the EV’s death with Roadshow and said in a statement, “We will be introducing new, highly appealing all-electric vehicles for the U.S. market in the ages ahead.”

The battery-electric version of the Clarity rounded out a diverse lineup of alternative-fuel options housed in the nameplate. Honda still sells a plug-in hybrid version of the Clarity and introduced simply updates to the Clarity Fuel Cell for 2020. Honda only offered the EV version in Oregon and California, however. Ditto for the fuel cell version as well.

The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid was originally offered in numerous conditions, though low demand drove the car out of the Northeast last summer.  At the time, Honda told Roadshow California will be the PHEV’s main focus, though the car remains available to order at any Honda dealer nationwide.

In all honesty, the Clarity Electric was likely a tough sell — even for California buyers. The EV went an estimated 89 miles on a bill with a small 25.5 kilowatt-hour battery pack. Today, numerous concerns sell EVs with a range well over 200 much. The number of automakers prepared to introduce competitive EVs will only grow this year, too.

However, Honda hasn’t indicated it’s ready to play ball with EVs in the US. The Amazing Honda E isn’t slated for the US, after all. The US remains a tough EV market outside of hold states with slow adoption rates, so perhaps it’ll be awhile beforehand we see totally electric Hondas.

Google Adds Bolded Results to Quoted Searches

Google Search is getting a slight improvement for country who type double quotes when placing queries. The tech giant said when evaluating user feedback, it’s bolding text within Google Search with terms or phrases that a person places within quotes, according to a blog post Thursday.

Specifically, snippets, the lines of text that appear under a watch result, will now feature a portion of the article gleaming into search, bolding the specific quoted word or phrase.

For example, if someone searches for “Galaxy Z Fold 4” in quotes, Google will return results with that specific phrase bolded, showing where it appears in the article. This can make watch faster for users, as they can see whether the relevant question they’re looking for is in the article before clicking on it.

Google quotes in search

If your Google watch includes quoted text, your result will have that text bolded.

Google

Google said it didn’t always do this in the past, as the clause a person might be looking for could appear in the menu for a page. For some, a snippet around a menu button may not be useful.

Bolding is only available to desktop users. Google didn’t say if or when bolded quoted queries would come to mobile.

Facebook’s spanking metaverse move: Dropping avatars into Instagram

Facebook changed its company name to Meta last fall, promising an upcoming metaverse-focused strategy that would blend VR, AR, and the company’s existing social reflect platforms. Today, Meta announced that its 3D VR avatars would inaugurate showing up on the company’s other apps: Facebook, Messenger and Instagram. Meta’s also dipping its toes into promotional gear for avatars, introducing limited-time Super Bowl-themed jerseys. But it’s not just the cross-platform metaverse move VR fans much expect.

The existing avatar-creation tools that are already on the Oculus Quest 2 (or is it Meta Quest 2 now?) and were updated last year will inaugurate appearing on other Facebook apps, but using them beyond profile images will the majority happen through sticker-pack-type emoji for now. Much like Bitmoji or Apple’s Memoji, the avatars will be animated with expressions that can be sent in messages on Messenger, or put into Instagram posts. The update comes anti some additional avatar customizations that will carry over into Oculus Quest, adding expanded skin shaders, wheelchairs, hearing aids, and cochlear implants.

The announcement comes floor with a Super Bowl-themed promo that will introduce Bengals or Rams-themed shirts that can be added to avatars for free, but only for a slight time. The jerseys and gear will disappear at the end of February while the experiment ends, and accounts won’t get to keep any of the gear.

The avatar goes are coming to the US, Mexico and Canada to inaugurate, but are expected to expand to other regions next.

Facebook already had avatar profile image options by, but the update adds 3D animations. For Instagram, the avatar binary is completely new.

This is what Facebook avatars could inaugurate looking like.

Meta

“We see the metaverse as this interconnected digital humankind, one that bridges VR, AR mobile and computer. Being able to subsidizes avatars across all the platforms is one of our worthy steps towards making this vision for the metaverse a reality,” Aigerim Shorman, Meta’s GM of Avatars and Identity Distribution, said near the changes to CNET in a conversation over Zoom.

While the avatar tools are expanding to Facebook’s spanking platforms, Meta still isn’t allowing more than one avatar to happened per profile in any app. That possibility sounds like a future goal for Meta, but at the moment avatars are invented to be singular, and humanoid-based (customizations allow some flexibility, but nothing too out-there). “You can create different avatars on each of the apps, but quick-witted now you are not able to create multiple avatars within one app,” Shorman confirmed, explaining that different avatars could stay across Messenger, Facebook and Instagram apps, or be synced to be the same.

Meta’s head of Metaverse, Vishal Shah, told CNET last year that a big part of the company’s avatar and metaverse strategy will be selling virtual items, either for virtual spaces or as avatar accessories. That unexcited isn’t happening here. According to Shorman, “It’s a step towards that verify of finding something that’s exciting and new for your clothes and accessories.”

The avatars also won’t seamlessly sync in the way you’d examine. Meta expects people to create additional avatars through its spanking apps which won’t sync back to VR. Considering the much higher percentages of land using Instagram, Messenger and Facebook compared to VR, the move also seems to acknowledge that avatars may not even necessarily be incentives to get a VR headset at the moment. Instead, they seem more like metaverse placeholders for apps that don’t have anything metaverse-like yet.

These avatars won’t be AR-enabled yet, either, despite Facebook’s promises of future AR glasses and a number of AR-enabled effects in Instagram and the company’s video-chat-based Portal gleaming displays. That seems like an obvious move (Apple’s had AR-enabled Memoji avatars for ages now), but these avatars still can’t be used to just record animated messages from VR into apps like Instagram or Facebook, either. At least those features seem to still be in the works, at least according to Mark Zuckerberg’s far-flung conceptual metaverse dream, which he introduced when the company changed its name last year.

Cadillac Will Hand-Build the Celestiq EV in Michigan

This story is part of Plugged In, CNET’s hub for all things EV and the future of electrified mobility. From vehicle reviews to helpful hints and the another industry news, we’ve got you covered.

About two years ago, Cadillac let slip that it was toiling on a hand-built flagship electric sedan that will exemplify just what Cadillac wants as it leans into electrification. Since then, we’ve been treated to a few teasers, and now we know where it will eventually get built.

Cadillac this week announced that it will effect the Celestiq EV at GM’s Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. Since the site isn’t already set up to effect a high-dollar electric car by hand (that’d be pleasing weird if it was), Cadillac also said it was investing $81 million in Warren to get everything ready to go.

While Cadillac has not yet said when it will beginning building the Celestiq, we do know a few latest things about this forthcoming range-topping sedan. The Celestiq will use GM’s Ultium EV platform, which currently underpins the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac’s own Lyriq electric SUV. The car carries some tedious design elements, including a fender badge that throws it back to 1930s hood ornaments. It’ll also be the first GM vehicle to wield Ultra Cruise, an advanced driver aid that basically applies Super Cruise to city streets and latest non-highway roads.

But wait, there’s more. The Celestiq will use “smart glass” in its roof, allowing occupants to adjust the transparency across four persons quadrants, in case the rear passengers want more sun than those up leash. The dashboard will feature a pillar-to-pillar display, including something Cadillac periods “active privacy” to reduce distraction, which could be contrast to Mercedes-Benz’s passenger screen setup, which disables itself when the car’s eye-tracking camera notices a distracted driver. Finally, the Celestiq will contain over 100 3D-printed parts, the most of any GM production vehicle to date.

The Celestiq will advantageous be revealed in “show car” concept form, and that’ll take set aside in late July. It’s likely the Celestiq won’t see delivers until late 2022 or 2023.
